Online antique and picture sale
The Truro Auction Centre holds its next two-day online Antique and Picture Sale on October 13 and 14 with, yet again, more unusual and interesting items fresh to the market going under the hammer. Two gentlemen’s 14ct gold pocket watches will certainly create interest and have connections with Cornish Miners migrating to America. One example is a 14ct gold pocket watch by Waltham in ornate case mounted with various coloured gold floral emblems in natural gold, expecting £1000-1500.
The other, again by American maker Elgin has a similar ornate case in varying colours of gold portraying flowers and birds and has its original mining-style pendant from Idaho.
A George III cased set of navigational instruments includes a brass protractor by Heath & Wing of London contained in its original fish-skin tapered case should certainly attract collectors, whilst an 18th century brass Masonic sundial by Charles Merry of London dated 1749 is engraved with Masonic emblems and asks £200£300.
One item difficult to value is the unusual ancient carved wooden maul probably olive wood, measuring 13” high and bearing an oval presentation plaque stating that it was found in the caves of Tura, where stone for the pyramids of Giza were quarried approximately 2000BC.
Older still is the prehistoric fossilised mammoth tooth measuring 10” high with a square stand.
More recent is the 1970’s Airedale Gallery
jukebox fitted into a mahogany cabinet disguised as a 19th century chest of drawers with separate selector and comes complete with records.
A large selection of pictures go under the hammer on October 13 including a good Cornish oil on canvas of Crantock Cliffs by well-known artist Nancy Bailey which expects £200-£300; a selection of watercolours by Dick Twinney being designs for the Bradford Exchange “River of Life” plate series certainly show quality.
Cornish clocks are always desirable both in and out of the county and the 19th century Cornish long case clock by John Renowden of Zennor is certainly simple in its appearance but has an 8-day movement and moon phase aperture in its traditional pine case.
