NHS plea to get both winter jabs

HEALTH experts for NHS England in the South West are encouraging people to stay safe and well this winter by getting both their Covid-19 and flu vaccinations.

Nearly two million people in the South West have had their Covid19 autumn booster vaccination since the beginning of September, however many of those eligible are still yet to take up the offer, including many of those who are considered at risk.

The NHS says getting Covid-19 and flu vaccines are “two of the most important things you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe this winter”, with concerns over the illnesses sweeping through communities during the colder months.

Dr Julie Yates, Lead Consultant for Screening and Immunisation for NHS England – South West, said: “We are particularly concerned about those who are pregnant, people with a learning disability, or people who have a medical condition that puts them at higher risk of complications following Covid-19 and flu infections, who may not yet have had their vaccinations.”

Dr Michael Marsh, Medical Director for NHS England - South West, added: “The protection from vaccines reduces over time so the booster is being offered to those at greatest risk from Covid19 and flu during the winter months when viruses spread most easily.

“This includes everyone aged 50 and over and those with conditions that put them at greater risk from Covid, such as people with weakened immune systems and pregnant people.”

Health experts say that having the Covid-19 and flu vaccines will also reduce the chance of people spreading Covid-19 and flu to friends and family who may be more at risk of serious problems if they get ill.

Flu and Covid-19 spread easily, even from people who show no symptoms, and with new Covid-19 variants developing on a regular basis, and with immunity reducing over time, the NHS says “the best way to protect yourself and others around you is by getting the flu and the Covid-19 booster vaccinations to top up your protection as we move into winter”.

The flu vaccine is also important for children who may spread the potentially deadly virus to loved ones, such as babies and grandparents, this winter.

Anyone who is eligible can book both their flu and Covid-19 vaccinations via the National Booking Service or by calling 119; through their GP practice; or by visiting a participating community pharmacy.
