Vast array of lots at timed online auction

-

OKEHAMPTON Auctions’ last sale of 2022 is going to be a large one, with a wide array of lots in all sectors.

Among the silver on offer is a fine pair of Mappin & Webb three branch candelabra of faceted baluster design on scalloped octagonal bases. They stand 10½” high and have the hallmarks for London 1966. They are of exceptionally heavy guage, weighing 2,680 grammes for the two, and have an estimate reflecting their excellent condition of £1,400/£1,500.

A vast number of china figures are to be sold, including four Beswick Native ponies from the Mountain & Moorland series which was produced from the early 1960s to 1980s. They are modelled by Arthur Gredington and feature the four breeds Fell, Highland, Dartmoor and Exmoor, each standing around 6½” high.

For collectors of mid-century furniture, a 1960s coffee table designed for Terence Conran by artist and designer John Piper stands out. The top is decorated with a skyline of St Pauls and St Martins in London.

The Westcountry artist W H Pike (1846-1908), who has had works featured at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute, was a prolific painter of Devon and Cornwall scenes throughout his long career. A watercolour study of Hessenford Mill near Looe in Cornwall depicts a woman carrying a large bundle of sticks coming down to the mill wheel with ducks in the foreground. It measures 13” x 9 ½” and is unfaded and is reasonably priced at £40/£60.

An early 20th century decorative dome-topped sewing box is probably French in origin. The lid opens to reveal a fitted tray above two doors enclosing two short and two long drawers with gilt handles. It stands on bronzed lions paw feet. With much decorative detailing and the use of several types of wood it has a pleasing overall effect. It stands 12½” high x 14” wide and 9” deep and the estimate of £40/£50 reflects the fact that some restoration is required to present it at its best.

Bidding in Okehampton Auctions’ timed online auction starts at 10am on Wednesday and runs until 12 noon on Sunday, December 4.
