Online bidding at specialised collectors sale

-

THE Truro Auction Centre holds its next specialised twoday collectors sale on December 1 and 2, including live online bidding, with a very large selection of lots fresh to the market.

The first day sees books, postcards, stamps and coins go under the hammer in what looks to be a very busy couple of days for the central Cornwall auctioneers.

Seven 1950s/60s Cornish-related circus posters in virtually unissued condition are not only colourful but certainly a good reminder of how the circus was in Cornwall in the mid20th century.

Within the stamps section, numerous penny blacks will obviously create large interest via the internet and one particular album of Victorian postal history should create special interest. This album includes an 1841 cover with 1d black stamp, five similar covers with 2d blue stamps and numerous 1d red covers. There are also other examples of 1d blacks.

Mint coin sets also feature, including a Victorian 1887 silver seven-piece coin set, as well as a 1937 specimen coin set which includes a silver four-piece maundy set in its leather case.

The second day boasts even more collectables, including a Victorian officer’s uniform of the Volunteer Artillery and two 18th century small swords in very much untouched condition, both having original vellum covered scabbards.

Certainly unseen in many auctions are the four 18th/19th century long arms which include an 18th century iron halberd with 9” curved blade on 9’ long ash shaft or a late 18th century iron spontoon on 9’ shaft invites a similar estimate.

A large selection of ship’s lamps and nautical items also come under the hammer on December 2, including a pair of brass arched ship’s lamps by Davey & Co. of London, various hanging ship’s copper cylindrical lamps, anchor lamps and many others.

In the medal section, as always there is a large array of various medals, badges and insignia but a more unusual offering is three Queen Anne medals commemorating three early 18th century conflicts – a 1708 Battle of Oudenarde silver medal, a 1709 Battle of Malplaquet silver medal and a 1710 bronze medallion for the Battle of Saragossa.
