Gold and jewellery were popular

-

LODGE & Thomas, The Truro Saleroom held its Easter Antiques, Fine Art and Collectables Sale last Friday up at their saleroom on Newquay Road.

Contemporary met classic in its Fine Art section where a limited edition print, “Busy Lizzie and Island View” by Bryan Pearce piqued the interest of a buyer from the North East with the hammer coming down at £1,150. Pearce was born to a St Ives butcher in 1929 and later went on to join both the Penwith and Newlyn Society of Arts in 1957.

His condition Phenylketonuria, which affects the normal development of the brain, contributed to his success by giving his artwork a unique naive outlook.

Gold prices are at an all time high and with hundreds of bidders worldwide, even un-hallmarked pieces such as a Belle Epoque tourmaline pendant soared ten times above its modest estimate. Butterscotch amber beads are still in high demand, and once again achieved close to £2,000.

From silver to silver plate prices were incredibly strong. An unassuming silver plated tennis trophy climbed to £400 and some speculative buyers suggested it could have some relation to early Wimbledon.

The oriental section contained a fiercely contested Chinese baluster vase, which by sale day had accrued five phone lines, two of which were from Beijing, as well as over £500 in bids before the sale even began. Despite having undergone major restoration the unusual four character mark to the base helped carry the four minute intense bidding war to £2,650, secured by a London buyer.

There were many examples of exceptional furniture but one stood out in particular. Towards the very end of the day came an exquisite early Victorian mahogany secretaire campaign chest that was remarkably still with its original outer pine packing cases, stenciled Captain Munroe Benn 88th C.Rangers. The cases were typically either destroyed during campaigns or lost thereafter, which is why this family piece in such good condition went away for £2,400.

Lodge and Thomas is now accepting entries for its upcoming Fine Art, Antique & Collectables Sales, scheduled for May 26.
