Popular Danish furniture

-

SOMETIMES after doing a probate valuation the auctioneers are left wondering what happened to the house contents which were valued. This was the case when the auctioneers recently received instructions to clear a property in Sidmouth that has been valued for probate a year before.

Being the estate of a retired gentleman who in his professional life was an architect with a major global airline with a keen interest in art and design, in the 1960s and 70s he was buying Danish furniture which is now so sought after.

One of the key items is by Ib Kofod Larsen Model 4346 designed in 1956 and produced by Fritz Hansen which is expected to sell for £2000-2600. The vast majority of the furniture was made for French & Sons and a Finn Juhl 152 ‘Bwana’ Danish teak lounge chair with matching foot stool is expected to make £1500-2000.

It also seems that he took a holiday to St Ives around 1963 when the Troika pottery first started and he bought a number of examples including some which are unique. These include a Love Plaque decorated by Leslie Illsley in an unusual light turquoise wash enticingly estimated at £500-800 but might double the lower estimate.

He also had a taste for art and Breon O’Casey ‘94 (1928-2011), ‘Still Life’, acrylic is expected to make £800-1200.

An usual offering of jewellery and silver has some fantastic opportunities including a flawless 1.04ct Deco 18ct white gold and diamond ring which at £4800-5400 is a steal. A 1950s 18ct gold, ruby and diamond bracelet by Ben Rosenfeld will likely see international bids from his followers with an estimate of £35004500.

After solicitors instructions to clear a property in Exmouth a Rolex Gent’s Oyster Perpetual Datejust Ref: 16234 fully boxed and with papers should attract £2500-3000.

Having been brought in by a gentleman during our first sale of the year in January a Royal Mint George

V Sovereigns Collection including examples from 1912 London, 1918 Bombay, 1911 Ottawa, 1926 Pretoria, 1911 Melbourne, 1911 Sydney and 1914 Perth.

Boxed with its certificate it is expected to make £2500-3000 and is part of his collection valued at £30,000.

In from a local Exmouth couple on the last day of entries is a Military Cross group of seven to J Wreford Kings Own Scottish Borderers with such a prestigious award and a mention in dispatches bids of £2500-3000 are required.
