Willand book Vase encounter with Bodmin

- BY LEE HALL

Willand Rovers will play at home to Bodmin Town in the third round of the FA Vase, following second-round wins for the pair last weekend.

Ryan Guppy’s 90th-minute goal in a 2-1 victory ensured Rovers’ place in the next round at the expense of Tavistock – Bodmin’s South West Peninsula League title rivals.

Russell Jee’s Willand side can expect another tough tie against Darren Gilbert’s Bodmin, who are five-times winners of the Peninsula League Premier Division.

Bodmin booked their place in the third round after beating Wessex League outfit Alresford Town 1-0 last Saturday courtesy of Ed Timmons’ extra-time winner.

Jee said: “It’s a home tie against a different league, and that’s all we can ask for. It will be another difficult tie, but they don’t worry us.

“We’ll have them watched and I’ll make sure we’re prepared when the time comes to play them,” Willand’s manager added. “Tavistock are a strong team and are a force in their league, and it will be similar against Bodmin.

“I will pick a side I feel can get a result against them. Saturday was a good game, end-toend, and I’m delighted with the result. I’m disappointed with the performance, and for the last couple of weeks we’ve not been at our best.

“Hopefully they will give us a big reaction against Wellington on Wednesday [in the Les Phillips League Cup].”

Willand earned an eighthminute lead with a goal from Dean Stamp but Tavistock posed a threat and Josh Grant equalised before half-time.

With extra-time looming, Guppy sparked home celebrations when he hit the winner with the 90 minutes up.

Third-round FA Vase ties are due to take place on Saturday, December 1, and St Austell supporters are dreaming of another memorable run after reaching the third round.

Neil Slateford and Mark Goldsworthy scored the goals last Saturday as St Austell once again proved too good for Western League opposition. After spectacularly dumping Plymouth Parkway out of the competition in the previous round with a 6-1 rout at Poltair Park, the Cornish side beat Cheddar 2-1 in Somerset.

Danny Griffiths pulled a goal back for the hosts after St Austell went two up but the visitors held on and will travel to another Western League team, Cadbury Heath, who won 4-3 at Exmouth Town.

They only other Cornish team left in the Vase are Saltash United, who won 3-1 at Ivybridge Town. Sam Hughes (two) and Ryan Richards were on target for the Ashes before Dave Youldon pulled a goal back for the Devon side.

Saltash have been drawn at home to Western League side Cribbs in the third round. Falmouth Town (3-1 at Hamworthy United) were among the second-round losers.
