Adams is hoping for goals from Sarcevic

- BY CHRIS ERRINGTON

Derek Adams wants to see Plymouth Argyle midfielder Antoni Sarcevic start chipping in with more goals.

The 26-year-old has been playing in a central role behind striker Freddie Ladapo over recent matches as Adams has tweaked his tactical approach.

He has been able to push forward more, while David Fox and Jamie Ness have assumed deeper midfield roles.

Sarcevic scored his first goal of the season in the 4-1 win away to Scunthorpe United on October 27. He also had a couple of decent opportunities when the Pilgrims lost 2-0 to Sunderland at Home Park last Saturday.

The new tactical system seems to be suiting Sarcevic, with the way he can cover a lot of ground during games, and getting some more goals would top that off.

Adams, Argyle’s manager, said: “We have played that way for a number of games now and it has allowed him to get the support to Freddie.

“He’s a player that can get beyond the striker and cause problems, and he did that at times [against Sunderland].

Sarcevic has scored six goals in 65 first team appearances for Argyle since signing for them in January, 2017.

Adams added: “He definitely has to score more goals. From a midfield player, you are looking at them to try to get ten goals if they play 46 games a season, and you want them to get assists as well.”

Argyle striker Freddie Ladapo has been nominated for the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month award for October. The 25-year-old scored six goals for the Pilgrims last month, and also provided two assists.

Wycombe Wanderers’ Adebayo Akinfenwa, Oxford United’s Simon Eastwood and Gillingham’ Tom Eaves have also been nominated.
