Pensioner in hospital after ‘arson’ attack

A man in his 70s was taken to hospital following a fire at a property in Liskeard. Police said the fire at a residentia­l property on Poldhu Road yesterday morning is believed to have been started deliberate­ly. Officers are currently treating the matter as suspected arson with intent to endanger life. A spokesman from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said three fire crews, from Liskeard, Looe and Callington, were called to the scene at 6.43am yesterday. Crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued one person and extinguish­ed the fire. A spokesman from Devon and Cornwall Police said: “A man in his 70s is being treated for smoke inhalation. He was taken to Derriford Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be serious.” Anyone with informatio­n about the fire is urged to call police on 101, quoting crime reference CR103588/18.
