Guiseley hang on to conquer Cambridge

-

Guiseley produced one of the biggest shocks in the first round of the FA Cup by beating League Two side Cambridge United 4-3 yesterday.

The Lions, 14th in National League North after relegation last season, raced into a 4-0 lead at Nethermoor before being given a hue scare.

Will Hatfield’s 30-yard halfvolley gave Guiseley a 25thminute lead and a spectacular mis-hit cross from Cliff Moyo made it 2-0 at half-time.

Two more goals early in the second period from Kaine Felix and Kingsley James seemingly put the West Yorkshire side out of sight, but Jabo Ibehre’s goal sparked Cambridge’s fightback with 25 minutes left.

George Maris fired United’s second in the 89th minute and Ibehre notched their third in stoppage time, but it was too late for the visitors.

Guiseley’s National League North rivals Chorley were denied an upset of their own but held on for a replay after having a man sent off in their 2-2 draw against League One side Doncaster Rovers.

Josh O’Keefe headed Chorley into a second-minute lead, but Herbie Kane followed up a rebound to level soon afterwards. Both sides then hit the woodwork before Courtney Meppen-Walter fired the home side into a half-time lead.

Chorley defender Matty Challoner was sent off with 29 minutes left for his reckless tackle on Kane, who curled home a superb late equaliser.

National League side Solihull Moors reached the second round for the second time in their history with a 2-0 win at Hitchin Town, the lowest ranked side left in the competition. Adi Yussuf broke the deadlock with a second-half penalty after Noah Chesmain’s foul on Jamey Osborne before Danny Wright struck 11 minutes from full-time.

Swindon Town sacked manager Phil Brown yesterday.

The Wiltshire team edged past non-League York City in the FA Cup on Saturday – their first home win since September – but they languish 17th in League Two following a run of one win in eight matches.

The 59-year-old former Hull City and Southend United boss was handed the Swindon job in March, following the departure of David Flitcroft to Mansfield Town.
