BEST OF THE REST
THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF Channel 4, 8pm
TIME for the remaining bakers to er, prove themselves – it’s bread week.
This means Paul Hollywood’s steely gaze becomes more intense than ever. Bread is his ‘thing’ and all the contestants know it.
“Be calm, it’s fine, it’s just bread,” says Michael. He’s not convincing anyone. Later he admits he has “bread dread”.
The first challenge is a filled tear and share loaf. Cue jokes from Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig about their bakes being torn apart by the judges.
The technical task is to make eight white burger baps, four of which should be filled with a veggie burger.
Finally an ambitious showstopper tests their artistic scoring skills on decorative loaves. But will Paul and Prue think the results are the best thing since sliced bread? Or will the loaves look like the doughy victims of a slasher movie?
Let’s just say, a Hollywood handshake won’t be handed out lightly.
SEAHORSE: THE DAD WHO GAVE BIRTH BBC2, 9pm
“NOT only women feel broody,” says 30-year-old Freddy at the start of this documentary.
He’s longing to have a baby, but there are unique Freddy and child challenges – he is a gay transgender man. After years of soul searching, however, he’s decided that he will carry the baby himself.
He says: “I’m going to have my own baby because it’s the pragmatic thing to do, it’s the simplest option. This is a physical process, then I will be a dad.”
So, swapping his usual dose of testosterone for folic acid, Freddy begins his extraordinary journey.
Cameras follow him through to the birth as he confronts the physical realities of pregnancy, plus society’s reaction. He has to deal with the response from friends and family, some of whom find his pregnancy confusing.
To see a man pregnant is shocking and fascinating, but this intimate film is also a thought-provoking insight into themes of gender, parenthood and family.
