Grandparents are real heroes for Brodie, five
WHEN asked by his school to dress up as a superhero for a photo project, Brodie Hill didn’t seek inspiration from the likes of the Hulk, Thor or Iron Man.
Instead, the five-yearold from Plymouth donned a simple bright green shirt in honour of his grandparents, who are helping to feed the nation by working at the city’s Asda store throughout the coronavirus outbreak.
Brodie got kitted out just like his grandfather Andy, who has worked on the groceries section at the supermarket for seven years.
His grandmother Louise, who is a home shopper, explained: “His school, Leigham Primary, have been sending work home through the internet and they wanted to do a collage for parents, so they asked the children who their superheroes were. Brodie came straight out and said “my grandma and grandad because they are key workers – they work in Asda”.
“I was quite overwhelmed by it all to be honest when he first said it. I was quite shocked. It’s a nice feeling, but as far as I’m concerned we are just doing our jobs. I said to Brodie, “What makes you call us a hero?” and he said “Because you give us all our food, sweets and drinks”.
“Then he said “I know it’s not just you and grandad, it’s everyone up there. There are lots of people in green tops!” It was so nice that he recognised all of us, rather than just us two. For a five-year-old to appreciate what we are doing is really good. It made my heart melt.”
Louise said her daughter, Tash, was “gobsmacked” by Brodie’s reaction. She added: “His favourite superheroes are those in Marvel, so when she asked him if he wanted to dress up as like Superman or the Hulk he said “No. They’re not superheroes, they are heroes”. He understands what Covid-19 is all about and, as far as he is concerned, we are the real superheroes.”
