CORNWALL councillors have given their backing to a new plan which sets out a vision of how Cornwall should look in 2050.

Gyllyn Warbarth – Together We Can, The Cornwall Plan 2020-2050 has been approved, although support was not universal, with Conservative councillors choosing to vote against or abstain from the vote.

The document has been drawn up by Cornwall Council following an extensive “listening exercise” which asked members of the public and organisations about ‘ The Cornwall We Want’.

It aimed to find out people’s views of what they would like to see in Cornwall in the future and how the Duchy should recover following the coronavirus pandemic.

Julian German, leader of Cornwall Council, said that the overarching aim of the plan was to create a “fairer, more inclusive Cornwall” and said there was a focus on building a greener, more sustainable future.

Gyllyn Warbarth sets out some goals and where it would like to be in 2050 – including “a creative carbon zero economy”.

It states: “In 2050 no-one in Cornwall is unwillingly out of work, and all jobs are paid at least the real living wage, ending in-work poverty. We have quadrupled our production of renewable energy, creating green jobs and helping to power the decarbonised national economy.”

The plan also aims to have sustainable food, land and seas: “In 2050 no child depends on food banks for good nutrition, and sustainably produced Cornish food and drink is highly sought after. Cornwall is growing nature with twice as much land and four times as much inshore waters in active management for environmental gain.”

Thriving places for decent homes are also an aim for 2050: “In 2050 street homelessness in Cornwall is ended, and every child has a secure home to grow up in. Vibrant towns and villages are well-connected so people can easily access what they need to live, work and play, with twice as many journeys made by green and active travel.”

When looking at education, equality and entrepreneurship the plan states: “In 2050, every child in Cornwall starts school ready with an equal chance to achieve a bright future. People of all ages can reach their potential with great lifelong learning and business support and Cornwall is united in tackling all forms of discrimination.”

The plan is also looking to create health, safe, resilient communities:

“In 2050, no one in Cornwall feels lonely and people live well for longer, enjoying good health for at least five extra years of their lives. Cornwall is the safest place in the country and compassionate communities are helping each other to live, learn and age well.”

And it also has a vision for a digital revolution for sustainable living: “In 2050 everyone is digitally included and Cornwall is one of the best connected places in the world, making it the natural place to grow great business. Cornwall is at the forefront of using smart technology to help people live well and connect with social networks and services.”

The plan has been backed by Cornwall’s health trusts, the Local Enterprise Partnership and Cornwall Association of Local Councils. It has also been adopted by Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, MPs and the Police and Crime Commissioner.
