Eden still closed after flooding

-

THE Eden Project remained closed to visitors yesterday as managers continued to assess the extent of the damage caused by weekend flooding.

The site was closed early on Sunday and visitors evacuated as a safety precaution after high volumes of rainwater caused several landslips on the edge of the former quarry. There were no injuries to visitors or staff and the biomes were not damaged.

Managers say they will be able to give an update later as to when the site could reopen and when. Visitors should check on the website www.edenproject.com and on Eden’s social media channels.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s Critical Control Centre received a call from the Eden Project early on Sunday asking for assistance to pump a large amount of flood water.

A spokesperson said: “An appliance from St Austell Community Fire Station was mobilised to liaise with staff on site, assess the incident and provide assistance if possible.

“After a quick assessment by the incident commander and liaison between Eden Project staff and the Environment Agency, the crew started pumping water away from the site.

“At 11.10am the crew ceased pumping and the Eden Project staff are arranging for a contractor to attend.”
