Former England cricketer holidays in Cornwall
FORMER England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has defended his holiday at a Cornish hotel following an erroneous claim that he broke coronavirus lockdown rules.
Vaughan has posted several Instagram posts and stories showing his stay at Fowey Hall, a plush hotel in the seaside town, since Sunday.
With Cornwall in coronavirus Tier 1 – one of only a handful of local authority areas in the country at the lowest level of restrictions – residents have been concerned about people entering the county from elsewhere to escape tighter rules. Someone contacted the WMN’s sister website, Cornwall Live about Vaughan’s stay.
People in Tier 3 are advised not to travel while it is illegal for those in the new Tier 4.
Vaughan quickly responded to these concerns, saying that since he lives in Tier 2 Cheshire, he is not committing any breaches. He added that he was happy to be supporting a “great” Cornish business that has been hit hard by the pandemic.
“I am allowed to travel so please let those who have great concerns know I am not breaking any rules,” he said. “The Fowey Hall Hotel has had 50% cancellations in the last two days, so we are here supporting a great hotel.
“Let’s hope they can get through all this as it’s a real concern. And we are breaking no rules.”
Official government guidance states people in Tier 2 local authority areas should avoid travelling where possible, but does not put any hard rules against going on holiday to a Tier 1 place like Cornwall. However, people like Vaughan who have travelled from elsewhere must still adhere to Tier 2 rules
