Cornish pubs shut doors for now to remain safe
A CORNISH pub has closed its doors for the foreseeable future after visitors from Tiers Three and Four were ‘actively making life unpleasant’ for staff.
The King Arthur’s Arms Inn in the heart of Tintagel has explained why it has closed on a sign outside the premises, as well as on its website.
The pub’s owners say people from other tiers are ignoring the stay-athome advice and are then being rude when refused entry.
In a statement, the owners of the four-star B&B and pub said: “We are now closed for the near future but we will be keeping this action under review. This decision is in a large part due to some visitors from Tiers Three and Four postcodes failing to adhere to the stay-at-home rules and guidance and are, when they are denied entry, actively making life unpleasant for our staff who have been diligently maintaining our strict Covid-19 precautions.
“Thank you to the many customers who have gracefully accepted cancellations of the holidays they have been looking forward to, and all the locals and visitors who have quietly and respectfully followed the Covid-19 rules and guidelines when using our pub.
“To those who have ignored the Government rules/advice and have actually found accommodation in our area, we can but hope that you are not a part of the army of silent coronavirus carriers that do not have symptoms, so by your very presence put our village at peril.”
It is understood that other pubs in the village have also closed, which comes after a popular pub and restaurant near Bodmin announced it will temporarily close its doors now that Cornwall has moved into Tier Two.
Despite being able to serve food from its restaurant, the staff at the Old Inn in St Breward say that to try and ‘sidestep’ the restrictions will only keep Cornwall in Tier Two for longer. They closed until further notice on Monday and said: “Under the new restrictions, we cannot serve alcohol unless customers are seated for a meal, and alcohol service must cease once the meal is finished.
“In addition, bookings must be for one household only per table. We know and appreciate the support we have been shown and also recognise that some bookings had been taken which are now being cancelled. We do sincerely apologise for this.”
