Pope is restricted by back pain

POPE Francis is skipping New Year ceremonies due to what the Vatican says is a painful back condition, a spokesman said.

Matteo Bruni said Francis is suffering from “painful sciatica” and would not preside at last night’s prayer service in St Peter’s Basilica, nor will he celebrate Mass today in the basilica for the same reason.

Despite the back pain, Mr Bruni said Francis will deliver his scheduled New Year’s blessing today in the library of the Apostolic Palace.
