Lowe challenges Pilgrims to secure League One spot

- CHRIS ERRINGTON chris.errington@reachplc.com

RYAN Lowe has set his sights on League One consolidation for Plymouth Argyle in 2021. The Pilgrims have ended 2020 in 17th position in the table, four points clear of the relegation zone.

Argyle were promoted from League Two last term and had a good start to 2020/21.

However, they have found it much harder over the recent times, losing seven of their last nine games.

Argyle will begin 2021 with a behind-closed-doors fixture against Gillingham at Home Park tomorrow.

Lowe said: “I think we are in a decent enough position. We probably had a bit of a false start in terms of high hopes.

“A lot of people probably got excited, but we know it’s not an easy league. It’s a tough league.

“In 2021, whether other clubs sign more players, or whether we sign players, there will be more changes again.

“I think it’s going to be an interesting 2021, but what we are doing we are relishing every opportunity of being in this league, where I feel we deserve to be.”

He continued: “We are on 23 points with 26 games to go. If you had given me that the start of the season I would have bit your hand off.

“What we need to do is make sure that we consolidate and stay in this league first and foremost.

“We will keep working, we will keep learning. It’s new to me and my staff, and it’s new to some of the players.

“But we have got a good group and a good set of staff and we will keep progressing the right way.”

Lowe was asked what he had learned about League One during the first four months of the campaign.

He replied: “I have learned it’s a little bit crazy this year without the fans.

“I have learned there are some good teams, and I have seen more long ball teams than I thought I would have of.

“But, also, I have come up against some good teams and some good managers who play the right way, and it’s entertaining.

“We have just got to keep learning because that’s 2020 now gone and we have got to look to the brighter future for 2021.”
