Cold weather warning for the South West issued

-

THE Met Office has issued a cold weather alert for Devon and Cornwall – warning of an 80% risk of freezing conditions.

The weather service’s cold weather health watch has declared a level two alert for the South West of England.

The alert for Devon and Cornwall warns prolonged periods of cold weather can be dangerous, especially for older people, those with underlying health conditions, and young children.

It urges people to check on vulnerable friends, family or neighbours and suggests people stock up foods and medicines to avoid having to go out too much when it is cold or icy.

It goes on: “When indoors, stay warm, heat homes to at least 18 degrees C, and keep up-to-date with the weather forecast. If you want more information about how cold weather can affect your health please visit the NHS website.

“If you are concerned about your health or somebody you care for, advice can be obtained from NHS Winter Health, NHS or your local pharmacist.”

A yellow warning for ice has also been issued for Cornwall and the north coast of Devon.

The warning will be in place from 5pm today to 11am tomorrow.

It covers most of Cornwall, apart from an area of south east Cornwall between Fowey, Launceston and Saltash. In Devon, only the north coast and the Chulmleigh and Hatherleigh areas are affected.

The Met Office states: “Icy stretches are likely to form in places leading to slippery conditions and perhaps some disruption to travel.”

It says showers and a mixture of rain sleet and snow, are expected to fall onto frozen surfaces.
