Sheridan takes the lead in her own clip show

POOCH PERFECT BBC1 , 8pm

OH, how we Brits love our dogs. Even more so during lockdowns, when getting out to give them a walk is the highlight of the day. This new series, presented by self-confessed crazy dog lady Sheridan Smith, celebrates our pampered pooches in all their growly glory.

Sheridan and her canine co-presenter Stanley are on a mission to find the nation’s best dog groomer, who must compete in a series of challenges to show they’re the best in the business when it comes to scissors and clippers.

Sounds a bit bonkers, right? Well, not that we’re saying it’s been difficult for companies to get telly shows made during lockdown and the age of Covid, but yes this really is a programme about dog grooming in a primetime BBC1 slot. We suppose they’re thinking this could be the latest in a long-line of amateur competition talent shows that the nation takes to its heart, like Bake Off, Sewing Bee or Pottery Throwdown.

In this first heat, the four groomers’ first transfurmation challenge is to tackle the longhaired Shih-Tzu – and for us mere amateurs the tricky bit seems to be figuring out which end is which, as some of those dogs seem to literally have no face.

Then their next quest is to give four curly-coated canines a cute Teddy Bear trim, before parading them down the dogwalk in front of their impressed owners.

But who will be left in the doghouse, and who will win best in show?
