Glasto still in balance but tickets valid for ’22

-

TICKETS for the 2021 Glastonbury Festival can be rolled over into 2022 if this year’s event does not go ahead, organiser Emily Eavis has confirmed.

The status of the Pilton-based festival this year has been a subject of debate in recent weeks, with concerns that this year’s event may again be forced to be cancelled like the 2020 edition due to coronavirus.

Ms Eavis herself took to social media to deny that the decision had already been taken to cancel Glastonbury 2021, saying there was “no news” after singer Mel B said on BBC Radio 5 Live that the festival would not go ahead.

Ms Eavis has offered a reassurance to prospective festivalgoers.

One festivalgoer replied to her tweet confirming there was “no news” about the 2021 festival as yet, asking whether tickets bought for this year’s event could be rolled over into 2022 if it did not go ahead, to which Ms Eavis simply replied: “Of course.”

Tickets from the cancelled festival in 2020 have already been made valid for the 2021 festival if it goes ahead.

The festival’s founder, Michael

Eavis, had previously spoken on the likelihood of a 2021 festival, suggesting it could be safe as long as the “majority” of the population are vaccinated.

After getting his own vaccine on New Year’s Eve, Mr Eavis said he wanted to be able to celebrate “in proper Glastonbury style” this summer.

He said: “It is really important that everyone takes the opportunity to have the free vaccine when it is offered to them – it is our only real chance of protecting ourselves and our friends and family from this disease.

“As far as the festival is concerned, wouldn’t it be wonderful to get the majority of our population vaccinated before June 2021, so that we can celebrate next summer in proper ‘Glastonbury style’.”

The future of festivals across the country has been a subject of debate following the surge in coronavirus cases, with events facing a “determination point” soon over their 2021 plans.

Steve Heap, general secretary of the Association of Festival Organisers, told the Press Association this week that April was the latest festivals could decide to cancel.

He said: “If we get as far as Easter and we still don’t know that crowds can gather at festivals, however large or small, then we are in a catastrophic situation with this year’s season.”

Paul Reed, the chief executive of the Association Of Independent Festivals, told a committee of MPs that larger events would have to make a decision by the end of January.
