First of Cornwall’s celebration days announces cancellation
A TOWN’s showpiece event has bitten the dust for a second year in succession, writes Chris Matthews.
Camborne Trevithick Day organisers have confirmed that the event will not be going ahead in 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Writing on the event’s Facebook page they said: “We are sad to announce that Trevithick Day will not be taking place in 2021. However it is Richard Trevithick’s 250th birthday and plans are in the pipeline to mark this occasion. Watch this space.”
The celebration of the heritage and mining heritage of town focuses on Camborne’s most famous son Richard Trevithick, the pioneer of high pressure steam-power, and takes place each April. The community festival offers free entertainment in the main streets of Camborne which are closed for the day, and attracts some 25,000 to 30,000 visitors.
Schoolchildren and adults alike take place in processional dances around the town and traditional steam engines impress the crowds.
Camborne Trevithick Day is the first event of Cornwall’s traditional celebration days to be cancelled this year. No announcements have yet been made regarding the likes of Helston Flora Day, Penzance Mazey Day and Padstow’s Obby Oss.
