West police issue nearly 3,000 fines

MORE than 30,000 fines have been handed out by police for breaches of Covid-19 laws since they came into force, new figures show – with police in the Westcountr­y among the strictest for imposing penalties.

Devon and Cornwall issued 1,233 fixed penalty fines, Dorset police: 1,010 and Avon and Somerset 610.

Greater Manchester officers issued 2,183 and the Metropolit­an Police 1,761. Other forces with high numbers of tickets issued include Northumbri­a at 3,034 and North Yorkshire with 1,484

Data published by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) shows a total of 32,329 fixed penalty notices were issued by forces in England and Wales between March 27 and December 21. The report said there has been a downward trend in recent weeks, following a rise in fines as from September.
