Explosive device is detonated on Cornish beach

-

A MYSTERY explosive device has been detonated in Cornwall, after washing up on a beach.

Boscastle Coastguard were called to Strangles beach when a member of the public spotted an “unidentified pyrotechnic” washed up on the shore.

Coastguard officers headed to meet the informant at around 11.44am on Saturday, and investigated the object when they arrived. The Coastguard team made the decision to transfer the object, referred to as a “pyro”, into a pyrotechnics box, and carry it away from the beach and into a nearby open field.

At this point, Boscastle Coastguard contacted the Royal Navy’s bomb disposal team, who attended the scene promptly.

The decision was made, because of the condition of the object, to deal with the explosive in the open field, safely.

The Coastguard said, after several hours, the team were stood down at approximately 4.30pm.
