A38 closed as fire fighters extinguish van ablaze

-

A VAN was completely destroyed by fire on the A38 on Saturday.

Crews from Bovey Tracey and Ashburton attended a lay-by after the van was reported to be on fire.

The Exeter-bound carriageway had to be closed as crews set to work tackling the flames.

They quickly extinguished the blaze, dampened it down and ensured there were no hazardous materials present.

Nobody was reported injured.

In a statement, the fire service said that, on arrival, the fire was found to be “well developed” in the front of the vehicle.

The statement went on: “After confirming that no hazardous materials were in the van, crews got to work with a hose-reel jet along with breathing apparatus.

“Due to firefighters working near the road, the lanes on the bravo carriageway (toward Exeter) were temporarily closed by Highways England to ensure crews could safely deal with the blaze.”

After the fire was extinguished, fire officers stayed on scene to ensure no fuel entered a nearby drain.
