RUBY ANNIVERSARY: BREED HISTORY CELEBRATED

-

WHERE do you see farming on Exmoor in 10 years’ time?

This is the question set to be discussed by the next generation of upland farmers at an Exmoor Hill Farming Network (EHFN) event later this month.

Taking place online, due to lockdown restrictions, the evening meeting will be open to members of the organisation’s Next Generation peer support group, which aims to help people aged under 40 gain knowledge and skills, and enhance their prospects in farming.

Those who have a general interest in hill farming, or are involved with farming on Exmoor, are being invited to join the event on Monday, January 25.

Network officer, Katherine Williams, said: “Do you work on a farm (s)? Do you work on the home farm? Are you looking to return home farming? Are you looking for farming opportunities in the future? Do you have a general interest in hill farming? We would like to hear from you. Join EHFN and representations from the Exmoor National Park Authority to discuss future farming on Exmoor.”

The evening, set to start at 7.30pm, will be run by EHFN directors Dave Knight and Tom Burge, who are both farmers’ sons and understand the opportunities and challenges faced.

Ms Williams added: “This is an opportunity to help shape the future of farming on Exmoor and feedback your opinions.”

The EHFN was established in early 2014 to improve the viability and sustainability of Exmoor farming businesses. It does this through knowledge-transfer, peer-group support, training, and co-operation to safeguard upland farming, rural employment and landscape management.

It has become one of the most sought-after initiatives on Exmoor, providing the ‘go-to hub’ of information and contacts for land-based businesses.

Since February last year, the EHFN has been running as a Community Interest Company (CIC) - meaning greater independence for the organisation, which works with over 300 farming businesses.
