Old surfboards recycled with new look
OLD surfboards are being converted into sleek paddleboards by a company based in south Devon.
Roy Sanders, managing director of Wave Boards in Modbury, says he wants to help as many people as possible enjoy “the wonders” the ocean has to offer.
The business boss, originally from Plymstock, started Wave Boards two years ago. He said: “We’re currently recycling old, damaged surfboards to prevent them sitting in landfill for hundreds of years.
“We do this by creating rideable works of art. We create bespoke, handcrafted paddleboards as well as saving old, damaged surfboards that are destined to be thrown away. We rebuild these using the Wave Boards finish of Balsa and Western Red Cedar so they can be ridden again.”
He added that the company was developing a SUP [stand up paddleboard] with a viewing panel to allow the user to see clearly under the surface.
“Our boards are also used for wedding guest books. These are then displayed in the home to be enjoyed for years after.”
He added: “Wave Boards’ mission is to help as many people as possible enjoy being out on the water and experiencing the wonders the ocean offers.”
