Top spot going to P Tucker of Bodmin, with a strong 19m Welsh Black with plenty of potential to £1055, next a pair of 11m British Blue cross steers from P Jones of Bratton Clovelly with exceptional muscling and outlook to top out at £970. SOUTH MOLTON

Stags report on January 7 a smaller entry of 884 prime hoggs this week, with numbers nationally going very short. The shortened numbers has driven the trade into overdrive, new buyers also in attendance making the hoggs very very dear. Predicting the trade has become extraordinarily difficult with pubs, hotels and restaurants all shut and processors reporting that exporting hoggs is still tvery difficult because of the bureaucracy yet the hogg trade takes off in the other direction. All types in very strong demand and sold up to 274ppk! It is very clear that all outlets are short and there doesn’t seem to be enough hoggs fit at the present time to cope with the demand. I suppose we want to remember that what can go up so fast can also come down as fast. Best pens to 274ppk to shapely 41kg Charollais crosses from Mr RP Williams of Winsford with 272ppk to 43kg Beltex crosses from Mr RW Tapp & Son of South Molton. 271ppk to 41.5kg Texel crosses from Mr D Kiff & Son of Muddiford with 268ppk twice; the first to 45kg Texel crosses from Mr JC Stimpson of Rackenford and the second to 42.9kg Charollais crosses again from Mr RP Williams. 267ppk to 40kg Texel crosses from Messrs CP & CA Guscott of Dulverton with 265ppk three times; the first and second pens to 43kg and 44kg Charollais crosses from Messrs Irwin & Sons of Mariansleigh and the third to 42.2kg Charollais crosses from Mr GR McLeod of Swimbridge. 43.4kg Texel crosses from Mr G Dart & Sons of Molland at 264ppk with two pens at 262ppk; both to 44kg Texel cross pens from Messrs HJ & RH Mildon of Brayford and Messrs Guscott’s second pen. 260ppk again to the Guscott Family with a pen of 44.3kg Texels with 259ppk six times; the first and second pens to 42.1kg and 43.2kg Charollais crosses from Messrs RJ & AR Snell of Burrington; the third to 44kg Texel crosses from Mr W Smale of North Molton; the fourth to 44kg Texel crosses from Mr G Dart & Sons again; the fifth 46kg Charollais crosses from Mr JC Webber of Burrington and the sixth to 46kg Texel crosses from Mr PG Nicholas of Ilfracombe. 258ppk to 44kg Charollais crosses from Messrs RO & MM Allin & Son of Beaford. Closely followed at £133 to 52kg Pure Texels from Mrs PA Stentiford of Whiddon with 57kg Suffolk crosses from Messrs Parsonage

Another decent line up of 396 cull ewes and rams to start the New Year and another lift in the trade. Last weeks trade was very strong and I would say that this week was again slightly up. As with the hoggs all weights, breeds and thickness was wanted although the leaner ewes definitely looked the dearest sold on the day. Again a reduced entry of ewes nationally has help keep the trade high and it looks likely to remain this way for a while. Top call today at £139 for a super Texel ram from Mr R Heggadon of Broadwoodkelly whose other Texel cross followed at £131. Charollais cross from Mr WJ Woollacott & Sons of Bishops Nympton at £129 with a Charollais from Messrs Irwin & Sons of Mariansleigh at £123.
