Pilgrims’ Canavan signs for Bradford

RYAN Lowe has admitted there is ‘potential for new additions’ after Plymouth Argyle defender Niall Canavan completed a move to League Two club Bradford City.

Canavan has signed an 18-month contract with Bradford, who have paid an undisclosed fee for him to the Pilgrims.

The departure of Canavan, and the continued absence of club captain Gary Sawyer due to an ankle injury, leaves Argyle short of defensive options.

So Lowe is highly likely to address that during the rest of the January transfer window.

His current options are limited to Will Aimson, Jerome Opoku and Kell Watts, who all started the 3-2 FA Cup third round win at Huddersfield Town on Saturday, plus Scott Wootton.

The future of Opoku is also not

clear because his loan spell from Fulham is set to end on January 28.

Lowe told the official club website: “Niall did a brilliant job in getting us back into League One last season, away from his young family, and we thank him for his contribution to Argyle.

“He came and spoke to me and said that he had the opportunity to move to Bradford on a longer-term deal, and we were not in a position to offer him anything beyond this season.”We felt that it was not right to stand in his way. To receive a fee is a positive for the club, and it now provides an opportunity for others to stake their claim, as well potential for new additions.”

Canavan signed for Argyle in the summer of 2018 and went on to make a total of 84 starts and eight substitute appearances, scoring five goals.

His last game for the club was the 1-0 League One win against Gillingham at Home Park on January 2.

Canavan was an unused substitute for the FA Cup tie at Huddersfield, when Opoku was recalled to the team and his performance was praised as ‘excellent’ by Lowe.
