Our history should not be erased

-

LET me say from the start I am neither for or against statues erected in the past to acknowledge what a person did for this country.

But what I am against is the modern generation deciding that certain statues should be torn down or removed because of Britain’s colonial past.

In that context, I am firmly against the statue in Exeter of Sir Redvers Buller being pulled down or removed because the great unwashed in today’s world are against anything to do with the heroes – like Sir Redvers Buller of our history – being tampered with in any way at all.

Today’s values are not yesterday’s! Personally, a statue of Rin Tin

Tin could be erected in Exeter and I would not notice it!

So I say leave things alone.

Statues remind us of our history (good or bad) and history must not be erased for any reason at all.

In his day, Sir Redvers Buller was very much a hero. Of course, like all of us he had his bad points. But so do we all. No one walks on water.
