SHUT-INS: BRITAIN’S FATTEST PEOPLE

Channel 4, 10pm

-

SUPER morbidly obese, addicted to food and imprisoned in their own bodies and homes, life for ‘shut-ins’ is relentless and miserable.

This episode follows 23-yearold AJ, from Airdrie, who weighs 41 stone after childhood bullying sparked weight gain.

“I’ve been shuttered like this for about six years,” says AJ. “Looking at the same four walls, not being able to go out. I can’t play football or drive like normal people do.”

Daily life is a struggle for AJ, who can barely move and relies on mum Sharon for everything.

“It breaks your heart to see your child like this,” says Sharon, who is also struggling with AJ’s decision to identify as nonbinary.

AJ and Sharon decide to investigate drastic surgery, but the surgeon declines until they make some major changes.

With AJ eating 5,000 calories a day and spending up to 19 hours on a mattress, can they make the changes necessary? It makes for incredibly sad viewing.
