STRIKER Niall Ennis has become Plymouth Argyle’s second new signing of the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old has left Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee on a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Ennis spent the first half of this season on loan to Argyle’s League One rivals Burton Albion.

He made a total of seven starts and three substitute appearances for the Brewers but did not get any goals for the struggling Brewers’ side.

His planned season-long loan was ended early last month and now the former England under-19 international has completed a move to Argyle.

Ryan Lowe tried to sign Ennis on loan from Wolves in the summer of 2019 when the Pilgrims had just been relegated to League two and Lowe had just taken over as manager but, instead, he went to Doncaster Rovers, where he scored six goals in 32 games, including 25 starts.

At the time, Lowe said: “He’s one of many on the list. Niall Ennis is a fantastic footballer. He has represented England, he’s a quality striker.

“But there are probably other clubs that are in for Niall Ennis, like we are in for other players.”

National football journalists Alan Nixon and Pete O’Rourke, who are reliable sources of transfer stories, had both raised the prospect of Ennis joining Argyle over the weekend.

Nixon tweeted that Argyle were ‘heading the race’ for Ennis and O’Rourke said the striker was ‘in talks over a move to Plymouth.’

Lowe has been looking to add to his attacking options this season after Timmy Abraham returned to

Fulham last month after a loan spell.

Ennis will now compete for a place up front alongside on-loan Blackpool striker Ryan Hardie and 15-goal top scorer and Wales Under-21 international Luke Jephcott, who have been the Pilgrims’ regular strike pairing, as well as Frank Nouble and Dom Telford.

Lowe’s previous January signing was 21-year-old Liverpool left-back Adam Lewis, who made his debut as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Crewe Alexandra at Home Park on Saturday.

Ennis will be available for tonight’s League One trip to the Stadium of Light, where Argyle will take on Sunderland.

However, he will not be available for Saturday’s FA Cup trip to Premier League strugglers Sheffield United, who are rooted to the bottom of the table. Ennis started for Burton in their shock first round exit to National League side Barnet.
