Care home loses 11 residents to Covid-19 since New Year’s Day

A CARE home in South Devon has confirmed it has lost 11 of its residents due to coronaviru­s deaths, following an outbreak of the virus which began at New Year.

A number of residents and staff at Windward House Care Home in Totnes Road, South Brent, tested positive for Covid-19 and the virus soon spread, proving fatal for some residents.

A support team has been in place to ensure all residents remain adequately cared for. The care home provides accommodat­ion with care and support for up to 42 older people. No staff members were critically ill and the majority are back at work this week, having isolated.

A spokespers­on for Windward House Care Home said: “Our staff have worked tirelessly since March to keep everyone safe and we have remained Covid-free throughout the pandemic until now. We are devastated as a team, and our thoughts are with the families of those 11 residents who have sadly passed away.”

Another six patients have died with Covid-19 in Devon’s hospitals, it has been confirmed.

NHS England has released its latest figures, which show which Trusts reported coronaviru­s-related deaths in the 24 hours up to 4pm on Monday.

The data reveals that another four patients died at the Royal Devon and Exeter (RD&E) NHS Foundation Trust – two on January 17 and two on January 18, taking the total there to 207.

Meanwhile, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust reported two deaths, one on January 17 and one on January 18.

No new deaths were reported in Cornwall.
