Legislation needed on fireproof cladding
SO the Housing Minister is worried about statues being toppled at the behest of “flash mobs or town hall militants and woke worthies” and seeks to introduce legislation to prevent it happening in future.
This must mean the police have no cases to bring regarding the downing of Colston’s statue in Bristol, otherwise why bother?
The statue was erected to celebrate good work of Colston, ignoring the evil he did. There might have been less reaction if a full account of his transgressions were posted on the plinth – instead there was prevarication for years by Bristol Council over what should happen to it. The majority of us white ‘middle class’ wouldn’t have a clue as to life being black, so don’t understand their anger against such relics from the past. How about a statue of Hitler for his achievements in building autobahns and VWs and forget the slaughter!
Perhaps if Robert Jenrick spent less time schmoozing Desmond for cash to bloat Tory funds even more, (going against council planning authorities and appeals to grant him consent) and appeasing the ‘offended statue admirers’, he could sort out the danger and mess flat owners face with highly inflammable cladding. Instead, he refuses to answer questions, hiding behind the £1.6bn Tories have promised in grants towards solving the problem (hardly enough to scratch the surface) and a vow of silence required from any recipients. There’s still no new legislation for fireproof cladding to high-rises required since Grenfell happened three years ago. It just shows the priorities of this government.
