A: "But surely your birthday is next month," said Susan, stroking the mink stole. "It's a lovely present."
"I got it with the £799 Aunt Aggie left me," said Linda. "But why the odd amount?" asked Susan.
"Well, she put £1 into a box my first birthday, and £1 for each year of my age after that until I married," Linda replied. "After that she made it three for each year instead of one. My last birthday she must have put in £87, and it all came to me."
How old was Linda when she married?
B: "A cheque for Dellers," said Sam. "I ve made it out for more than we owe, to save a trip to the bank."
Karen nodded. "Good idea. What do we owe them?" Sam thought a moment. "Just ten pounds more than the change I'll get," he replied. "If the cheque were twice what I made it out for – and if we owed half what we do – the change would be four times as much as it will be." How much did they owe?
