We’ll never know the true cost of Brexit

-

IT is a fact that billions of pounds have been spent on planning for a Brexit deal or no deal. We’ll never know the precise cost because this huge cost will be lost in the terrible cost of this dreadful pandemic.

We do know that our poor fishermen are having to waste £1m of unsaleable fish daily as a direct result of Brexit, so the Government are spending another £23m in supporting these good people.

Mr Rees-Mogg’s explanation that the fish are better off now that they are British (“They’re now British fish and they’re better and happier fish for it”) is an insult to our hard working fishermen but does sum up the thinking of many hard line Brexiteers – but not the reason why others voted leave.

Time will tell if these massive sums of money would have been better spent on the NHS, supporting the less well off, etc, etc.

I continue to ask the question: “Was Brexit really worth it?”

The only answer so far is that, after the inevitable teething problems, we can look forward to a fantastic new future. I really do hope I’m wrong, but I doubt if we’ll ever know if the benefits of Brexit will ever exceed the massive costs (and not just financial costs).
