Why don’t we just get rid of all our history?

-

IT seems absurd that following the usual ‘consultation’, the statue of Sir Redvers Buller could be moved to an alternative, more ‘appropriate’ location.

If he should go, then it’s time to melt him down. At the same time, all statues dating back more than 30 years should also be removed.

Let’s face it, each and every one of the people depicted was involved either in colonial wars, wars against our friends across the channel, the pillaging of treasures belonging overseas, the exploitation of people and the poor of this country.

And don’t stop there.

How about the founders and funders of countless institutions, universities, colleges and buildings throughout the UK? All must now close and be demolished for muchneeded inner-city housing.

The National Trust must mothball all its stately homes for similar reasons.

How did the gentry come by their wealth – of course, more horrendous seizure of nations, their mineral wealth, people and environmental damage.

And history must go too. We can no longer tolerate our children and young people being distressed at hearing about the appalling way our ancestors behaved.

Sorry about the thousands of teachers, historians and administrators who will, thereby, become redundant.

Once we have swept away the past, the welfare of the young and impressionable will be secure and for that, they will be truly grateful.

There is, of course, an alternative: let Sir Redvers remain and thereby, we can learn from the mistakes of the past so that we may not repeat them in the future.
