Lowe will bide his time for the right defender

-

RYAN Lowe has revealed that he has been ‘offered loads of players’ as he tries to add a new defender to his Plymouth Argyle squad, writes Chris Errington.

Lowe admitted some of them had not been good enough for what the Pilgrims needed and he is determined to only sign someone who is ‘the right fit’.

Argyle made a bid, reportedly to be in the region of £50,000, for Ipswich Town defender Janoi Donacien earlier in the January transfer window.

League One side Ipswich rejected the offer and apparently would rather loan out the 27-year-old than sell him.

The latest reports out of East Anglia are that Argyle’s League One rivals Fleetwood Town and Wigan Athletic both want to take Donacien on loan, as well as Accrington Stanley.

Lowe is in the market for a defender after Niall Canavan completed a transfer to Bradford City for an undisclosed fee last week.

That has left the Pilgrims’ boss with Will Aimson, Jerome Opoku, Kell Watts and Scott Wootton as his remaining options for that important area of his team.

Lowe said: “I can’t give you no updates on who we are trying to sign, of course, because I don’t want it to go out the window.

“But we are looking, we are still in the market for a centre-back as everyone knows. It’s a long process.

“I have just had three missed calls off Neil Dewsnip (Argyle’s director of football) while I’m on this call now so hopefully there is some good news.

“We have just got to keep working hard and keep making sure that we do the right thing by the club.

“We can’t just bring in anyone. We have been offered loads of players since I said we were looking for a centre-back but some of them are not good enough.

“They have got to be better than what we have got in the building otherwise it’s pointless bringing them in.”

Lowe has made two new signings during the transfer window so far on-loan Liverpool left-back Adam Lewis and former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Niall Ennis.

Lewis scored on his first start for the Pilgrims when they beat Sunderland 2-1 in a League One game at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday, while Ennis made his debut as a substitute.
