Fletcher leaves Tiverton for Bath

TIVERTON Town joint-manager Martyn Rogers says Alex Fletcher is more than good enough to play in the National South after the striker’s move to Bath City this week.

With the Southern League suspended, Tiverton’s players have been kicking their heels so the move to Bath for an ‘undisclosed fee’ makes sense for all parties.

However, Rogers admits his frustration that they couldn’t finish their season with Fletcher leading the line.

Fletcher joined the Premier Division South club in the summer after being released by Plymouth Argyle, and he scored eight goals in 11 games for the MidDevon club, who are second in the currently suspended table.

It is unclear whether Tiverton’s season will continue, however, and Fletcher (pictured) will be able to play at the higher level with Bath, who are just above the relegation zone in the National South division.

Rogers said: “We had Chippenham Town and obviously Bath come in for him. We had a conversation with Alex when we first signed him that we wouldn’t stand in his way if someone higher came in.”

Of the ‘undisclosed fee’, Rogers said: “We are happy with what we got. I think we could probably have got more but in this situation, with what’s happening at the moment, it is difficult for clubs to be paying fees - but we got a decent amount.”

Fletcher, 21, played 19 games for Argyle, scoring two goals, and had loan spells with Torquay United and Aldershot Town.

It was a surprise when he left Home Park in the summer and Rogers was quick to snap the player up when he became available.

Fletcher made his debut for Bath in their 2-1 home win against Havant & Waterlooville on Tuesday night. “I think he is good enough for the level above the National South as well,” said Rogers. “It’s just unfortunate and I don’t think this would have happened if we had carried on playing.”
