POLICE ISSUE APPEAL ABOUT LOCAL EXERCISE
POLICE in Cornwall are urging locals to consider just how local they are to their surfing haunts after around 100 people turned up at a popular – but small – village on Saturday.
A large number of surfers descended on the popular beach at Perranuthnoe on Saturday morning, filling the small car park with more than 50 vehicles.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed they had been alerted to the large number of surfers and vehicles by concerned residents and as a result officers deployed to the area to investigate.
Yesterday, the force said that “quite a lot of the vehicles are registered locally” but noted that some were from registered outside the area and officers would be speaking with surfers to determined whether their exercise was being carried out locally or from much further away.
Yesterday, senior officers confirmed that, following a number of inquiries, the “overwhelming majority [or surfers] were local”. A spokesperson for the force said: “We will continue to take the approach of the three E’s [engagement, explanation and encouragement], particularly with locals.
“The local neighbourhood policing team attended Perranuthnoe, where they offered advice about the Government guidelines regarding exercise, but we can say that the overwhelming majority of those spoken to were local.”
