The Price of love
KATIE PRICE: HARVEY AND ME BBC1, 8.30pm/ BBC Wales, 10.45pm
THIS heartwarming and personal film follows Katie Price and her son Harvey during a crucial year of his life. The emotional film reveals a completely different side to TV personality, businesswoman and former glamour model Katie as she opens up about her life as the mother of a severely disabled child.
This year Harvey turns 18, presenting Katie with difficult decisions and a daunting uncertainty about his future.
Harvey was born with the rare genetic condition Septic Optic Dysplasia, which affects brain function, hormones and vision. But he also has a long list of other medical and behavioural conditions, including autism.
He has the cognitive understanding of a seven-year-old and due to hormone issues, can’t control his weight, which is now over 28 stone.
Cameras begin following Katie and Harvey on his 18th birthday, as he opens presents and enjoys a trip to the local railway station.
Change is already afoot as they must confront the fact that Harvey will need to transition away from care at Great Ormond Street
Hospital into an adult hospital, and will also soon leave school for college.
It’s tough for Harvey and Katie, who has an extremely close bond with her son and is his main carer.
Katie says: “Now he’s turned 18, it’s not about me and Harvey, it’s about Harvey. I don’t like that detachment from him, but he has to have his own identity, he can’t always have mummy there.
“I know I might have to let go a little bit.”
