A: Jack had his army arrayed in two solid squares on the big table. "That's funny," he declared. "The soldiers along the eight sides come to 104, exactly one fifth of the total I've got there."
"You do have a lot," his father commented. "But you could have the same one-fifth ratio with quite a different total number for two squares."
He was right, so what would the number have been?
B: "It's a long street, and I only remember what Ted told me about their number," said Tony. "Perhaps you can figure it out. If you subtract the square of the first two digits from the square of the other two, you get seven less than their number."
