THE REPAIR SHOP

BBC1, 8pm

-

KIDS should be allowed to watch this show in school as part of a living history lesson – every item tells a wonderful story from the past.

In a perfect example, tonight’s episode sees Rose Werner visit the Repair Shop with a decorative leather box that is falling apart.

“It is Jim’s box,” she explains. “Jim was my husband. He died 10 years ago. It’s where he kept his family treasures.”

She goes on to explain that Jim came over to the UK on the Kindertransport from Hamburg when he was just 13, a Jewish refugee of Nazi Germany.

Sadly Jim never saw his family again as they were killed in the gas chambers in Poland.

The treasured box is his only link to his heritage and Rose would love it to be safely preserved.

“His life story is in that box. While I’ve got that, I’ve always got Jim.”

As always, the results pack an emotional punch.
