Newport swoop for Argyle’s Telford

RYAN Lowe described striker Dom Telford as ‘a class act’ after the 24-year-old completed a transfer from Plymouth Argyle to Newport County for an undisclosed fee.

Telford followed Lowe from Bury to Home Park when he was appointed as the Pilgrims’ boss in the summer of 2019.

However, most of his 47 appearances for Argyle were as a substitutes and he had started only two games in League One this season.

With Argyle signing striker Niall Ennis from Wolverhampton Wanderers last week, that opened the way for Telford to move on.

Newport, who are fifth in League Two and a couple of points behind leaders Cambridge United, have given him the opportunity to get more game time.

Lowe told Argyle’s official club website: “We would like to thank Dom for his efforts. He was part of our promotion-winning team last season after joining from Bury.

“He had ups and downs with injuries last season, but, as a lad, his attitude towards training and matches was first class.”Dom scored some good and crucial goals for us, but we felt that, this year, with the performances of Luke Jephcott, Ryan Hardie, Frank Nouble, and bringing Niall Ennis in, that he needed to get some games.”I’m pleased for Dom, he will go and score a load of goals and hopefully help get Newport promoted.”We thank him for his contribution. While he’s been here, he’s been nothing but a class act, and we wish him all the best.”

Telford has previously won promotion from League Two with Argyle and Bury, which is why Newport manager Michael Flynn targeted him.

Flynn told Newport’s official club website: “Dom has a lot of experience playing in the Football League and will bring a lot of quality to this squad. He knows what it takes to get out of this division after his promotions with Plymouth and Bury.”
