Different views on two special sites
I WAS very concerned to read from Howard Lloyd’s article (WMN Jan
28) of the damage being done by visitors to Wistman’s Wood which is a truly wonderful feature of Dartmoor.
It was pleasing to read Cllr Philip Sanders’ concern and his comments that many of those visiting ‘were not interested in conservation’ and ‘the damage being done was irreparable’.
These words and his expressions of concern for the Devon countryside revealed another side of Cllr Sanders as some eight weeks ago he had no hesitation in voting in favour of an application for a landfill comprising 700,000 tons of soils from building sites into a beautiful Devon valley in an Area of Great Landscape Value – this would take place over a 10/15 year period destroying the valley.
It is difficult to understand how a representative of the Devon electorate who serves on the Planning Committee can have such a contrasting view of two very special Devon locations.
