The rover’s returned

COVID has ruined all travel plans – so what’s a girl to do? Seasoned traveller Joanna Lumley does not like to disappoint, so of course, she’s turned her attention to home.

“I was born in India and grew up in the Far East and I’ve spent a lifetime travelling the world,” she says, in that soothing voice.

“But I’m getting older and there’s so much of my own country I haven’t seen. So I decided that using my travellers’

eyes, I’m going to turn that vision onto this country, the place that I now call home.”

Over three episodes, Joanna travels from the Yorkshire Dales to St Michael’s Mount, from the Highlands of Scotland to the cobbles of Corrie, retracing old steps, meeting inspiring people, and exploring the wonders of the country.

“I want to find out what makes Britain tick,” she says.

Of course, Joanna makes everything cool and fabulous, so this is not a run-of-the-mill tour of the isles.

At the Aston Martin factory in Newport Bagnell, the former Bond girl, reminds us: “I once had an entanglement with a certain secret agent.”

Later, there’s a wonderful moment when she interviews Bill Roache on the set of Coronation Street.

She says: “For four weeks in the summer of 1973, I had a starring role on the most famous street in Britain.

I was Ken’s girlfriend, Elaine Perkins, daughter of the local schoolmaster!”

“You haven’t changed a bit!” she tells Bill.
