Ennis leaves a good first impression on his boss

-

RYAN Lowe has admitted the early signs from recently-signed Plymouth Argyle striker Niall Ennis have been very encouraging.

Ennis scored his first goal for his new club when he grabbed a 78th minute equaliser in the 2-2 League One draw with Accrington Stanley at Home Park on Saturday.

It came in his third successive appearance as a substitute after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a two-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Ennis linked up superbly with Pilgrims’ playmaker Danny Mayor before putting the Pilgrims level against Accrington.

But it was not only that goal which has Lowe speaking so positively about the 21-year-old.

Lowe said: “He has been on fire in training. We did a bit of shooting with him last week.

“I watch the strikers closely, and their movement and where they always hang out. He likes coming from the left-hand side to go in.

“The link-up play (with Mayor) was fantastic. I was pleased for him to see it hit the back of the net.

“We know he can score goals but when you get off the mark at a new club it’s always pleasing.”

Lowe added: “He can hold the ball up well. He has got a physique that I would die for nowadays!

“We know what we are getting with him. We know what type he is. He’s a great lad, a great character around the place, he’s always wanting to learn.”

When Ennis replaced Argyle top scorer Luke Jephcott in the 68th minute against Accrington he went up front with Ryan Hardie.

Ennis has also created a good impression on Hardie, who turned his season-long loan from Blackpool into a permanent move to Argyle last Friday.

Hardie said: “He’s exciting. From the first day he came in, I thought ‘We have got a livewire’.

“He’s nippy in and around the box, he links up well and he will provide good competition for places.

“That’s what we need. At any club you need to be fighting for your jersey.

“There is a lot of games still to play. We are only just over halfway through the season so there is going to be squad rotation.

“We have played five games in 10 days, or whatever it was, and a lot of away trips. We need the strength in depth.”
