Law says thanks and goodbye as he heads to USA

FOR the past two and a half years, Nicky Law has been the main man at Exeter City. Player of the year in his first year and one of the star performers in 2019/20, he was a man that was idolised by City fans with his class so evident in so many outings for the club.

Now, though, life without Law begins at St James Park after the 32-year-old was allowed to cut short his stay in Devon to take up a once in a lifetime opportunity in the US, playing for ambitious Indy Eleven of the USL Championship, a step below America’s MLS (Major Soccer League.)

In total, Law made 106 appearances for the Grecians, scoring 20 goals and while his appearances were more limited this season, for various reasons, his absence is sure to be missed. And tonight, life without Law begins with a trip to Stevenage, where Law was on target with a late winner last season.

Before boarding the plane to behind his new venture in Indianapolis, Law gave an emotional farewell interview to those supporters that adored him.

“From day one it has been a fantastic experience for me, scoring against Carlisle at home on day one, and I never looked back,” Law said.

“The fans have been amazing from that day and sang my name from day one, and the support and adulation given to me from day one has been unbelievable and made me feel ten times the player I am.

“Of course we have misused them for the best part of a year and that is the saddest thing, to not see any of the fans before I go, so I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart as it has been a great two and a half years, and look forward to seeing the team pick up in the second half of the season.

“I have enjoyed every day and working with every single one. I am sad to go but looking forward to the next chapter. I have some great memories and am proud of the last two and half years.”

Law added: “I want to say a massive thank you to every single fan for the support that I have had. It is a difficult spell at the moment and I know they will support the team and I have no doubt that this team is good enough to push on and finish very strongly as we have in the previous seasons. Thank you and hope I will get back at some point.”

Law played his final game for the Grecians in the 1-0 defeat at Carlisle United on Saturday, where he was handed the captain’s armband by manager Matt Taylor. The Cumbrians were the team he made his debut against as well, scoring in a 3-1 win at St James Park in Taylor’s first game in charge.

Explaining why he took the decision to leave, Law said that in thinking about the latter stages of his career, the offer to move to America and take up a coaching opportunities was one that he simply couldn’t turn down.

“It is a country I have always loved going to and it is something that I have always wanted to do to go and play abroad but the right opportunity never showed up,” Law said.

“I found out about this a while back and whether we could get it done I wasn’t sure, but manager and the board have allowed me to go and done so with a heavy heart. They didn’t want me to go but they wouldn’t stand in my way if it was something I wanted to do.”
