Case rates continue to fall across most of West

DEVON’S case rate of coronaviru­s infections has fallen to its lowest level since the beginning of October.

Government coronaviru­s statistics for the seven days ending February 2, show that areas under the authority of Devon County Council (which is all of Devon excluding Plymouth and Torbay) currently has a case rate of 66.4 cases per 100,000 people which is also the lowest in England.

Over the last seven days, there have been 533 cases in this area, which is a fall of 223 compared to the previous week.

In Plymouth, the trends are also optimistic, with the current case rate per 100,000 people standing at 93.1 cases per 100,000 people.

The last seven days have seen 244 cases per 100,000 people in the city, with a week-on-week reduction of 43% or 184 cases compared to the previous week.

The city of Exeter, whose statistics come under the Devon County Council figures, currently reports 57 cases for the seven days ending February 2 and a rolling rate of 43.4 cases per 100,000 people.

However, in Torbay, cases are increasing with an additional 29 cases compared to the previous week meaning there are currently 235 cases, and a rolling rate of 172.5 cases per 100,000 people.

The latest coronaviru­s data provided by the UK Government also confirms that cases in Cornwall continue to fall.

The latest rate per 100,000 people stands at 110.9 cases per 100,000 people and in the seven days up to February 2, there were 634 cases, a fall of 379 compared to the previous week.

A majority of areas are still seeing a fall in the number of cases, with the highest total of cases in one particular area currently in Lostwithie­l and Penwithick, where a fall of two cases sees the total reduce to 38 cases.

Over half of Cornwall now has less than ten cases in each area, with 44 of the 73 areas the statistics are divided into having single-digit numbers of cases, with nine areas having less than three cases, meaning their totals are between zero and two.

The ten areas with the most cases currently are Lostwithie­l and Penwithick with 38 cases.

Next comes Bodmin East with 25 cases, Bodmin West (22 cases),

Helston (19 cases), Truro West (19 cases), Redruth South (17 cases), Redruth North (16 cases), St Day and Lanner (16 cases), Altarnun and Stoke Climsland (15 cases) and Camborne West (14 cases).
