Couple fear foul play after new camper van goes up in smoke

-

A COUPLE say they are ‘gutted’ after their three-month-old camper van was destroyed by a fire.

Carl and Laura Bowser had bought their Volkswagen T4 camper van just three months ago, but Laura said that, on looking outside in the early hours last Saturday, she saw that the vehicle was well alight.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene on Queen’s Avenue, Ilfracombe, where one appliance was mobilised to tackle the blaze.

The rescue team believe that the fire was started accidentally, but Laura is concerned it may have been deliberate.

When asked what she thought to be the source of the blaze, she said: “I’m not sure, but what car catches fire eight hours after being used in freezing cold conditions?”

The couple are appealing for anyone who may have CCTV footage outside their houses nearby for answers.

Laura posted on Facebook: “Hello, just wondering if the residents of Queens Avenue can help.

“Last night around 2am, our VW T4 was on fire. Now, we had parked it up about 6pm after my husband finished work.

“So there was no chance it was accidental. Is there any CCTV on any homes that could possibly have seen anybody on foot or in a vehicle?

“My husband is gutted as he had recently purchased this in the last three months. If anybody has any info, please get in contact. Thank you to those who have helped so far.”

The pair have reported the fire to police.

Laura’s husband’s belongings went missing and the potential theft is reportedly being looked into.
